CONYERS – Immunization Awareness Month is already off to a great start!

Georgia’s First Lady, Sandra Deal, visited Piedmont Rockdale and Piedmont Newton hospitals Wednesday afternoon to speak with new parents about the importance of immunizations, early literacy and safe sleep practices.

Deal is a strong advocate for children’s health, emphasizing the importance of scheduled immunizations, and said she supports Piedmont’s First Steps program’s focus on maternal health, infant and child safety and wellness.

“We as parents love our children,” said Deal. “Our goal is to see them grow up strong and healthy. To ensure they stay healthy, it is important that we protect them from diseases that would undermine their future. We can do this through immunizations.”

Deal gave each family a immunization card to track immunization records, a signed copy of the children’s book “Who I’d Like to Be” by Elizabeth Brown and a packet on Piedmont’s First Steps program.

The First Steps program at Piedmont Rockdale is a program of Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale and has provided parenting information and resources to the community for over five years.

Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale Earns “Partner in Prevention” Designation To Protect Children

Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale has achieved “Partner in Prevention,” a nationally-recognized public standard to end child sexual abuse (CSA).

The designation was awarded for Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale commitment to protecting children by training 90-percent of its staff and volunteers on how to prevent, recognize the signs and react responsibly to CSA.

“Partner in Prevention” was created as a national standard to help parents and caregivers recognize organizations who take CSA prevention seriously by implementing policy and training staff.

The training and designation award is provided by Charleston, SC-based Darkness to Light (D2L). D2L has championed the movement to end CSA since its founding in 2000 and now has education programs in 49 states and 15 foreign countries.

D2L’s training curriculum points out that CSA is pervasive in a society where it is repressed and not discussed. Thousands of organizations across the U.S. and Canada are now seeking out a dialogue for prevention and they are sending parents and the community a message with the Partner in Prevention distinction.

Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale (PCAR) has provided prevention programs in our community since 1989. PCAR is the primary and premier provider of parent education classes in Rockdale and Newton Counties.

To learn more about CSA prevention training or to enroll your organization in D2L’s “Partner in Prevention” program, please visit www.d2l.org. Please also contact D2L Program Coordinator Erika Rowell at 842-965-5444.

About Child Sexual Abuse (CSA)

Crime and behavioral studies have long cited CSA for its devastating impact on society. Statistics are startling, according to the Fourth National Incidence Study of Child Abuse & Neglect:

  • 95% of abuse is by someone the child knows and trusts.
  • 73% of children don’t tell anyone until well after the abuse has occurred, if they tell at all.
  • Statistically, approximately 500,000 babies born in the U.S. each year will be sexually abused before they reach age 18.
  • In the U.S. alone, there are an estimated 42 million adult survivors of child sexual abuse.
  • CSA is linked to a host of social issues including teen pregnancy, psychiatric disorders and substance abuse.
  • CSA ranks second to murder as the most expensive victim crime in the U.S., where costs exceed $35 billion annually.

Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale

Since 1989, Prevent Child Abuse Rockdale has been dedicated to ensuring that all children are raised in a safe, loving, nurturing home free from all forms of abuse and neglect.

October is SIDS Awareness Month

babyWhat is SIDS?

  1. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden, unexpected death of a baby younger than 1 year of age that doesn’t have a known cause even after a complete investigation.
  2. It is the leading cause of death among infants between 1 month and 1 year of age.
  3. African American and American Indian/Alaska Native babies are at a higher risk of SIDS than infants of other races and ethnicities.
  4. SIDS is just one type of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death or “SUID,” which includes those from no clear reason, such as SIDS, and those from a known reason, such as suffocation, neglect, homicide, or other sleep-related causes.
